TYPES OF
HAZARD/
EXPOSURE
ACUTE HAZARDS/
SYMPTOMS
PREVENTION FIRST AID/
FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE Not combustible but enhances combustion of other substances. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire.
NO open flames. NO contact with flammable substances. NO contact with hot surfaces.
In case of fire in the surroundings: do not use foam or dry chemical, preferably use water in large amounts, water spray.
EXPLOSION Risk of fire and explosion if mixed with organic substances, metal powders, ammonium compounds, combustible or reducing agents.
Do NOT expose to friction or shock.
In case of fire: keep drums, etc., cool by spraying with water. Combat fire from a sheltered position.
EXPOSURE
PREVENT DISPERSION OF DUST! STRICT HYGIENE!
IN ALL CASES CONSULT A DOCTOR!
  • INHALATION
  • Cough. Sore throat.
    Local exhaust or breathing protection.
Fresh air, rest. Refer for medical attention.
  • SKIN
  • Redness.
    Protective gloves.
First rinse with plenty of water, then remove contaminated clothes and rinse again. Refer for medical attention.
  • EYES
  • Redness. Pain.
    Safety goggles.
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
  • INGESTION
  • Abdominal pain. Blue lips or fingernails. Blue skin. Confusion. Convulsions. Diarrhoea. Dizziness. Headache. Nausea. Shortness of breath. Sore throat. Unconsciousness. Vomiting. Symptoms may be delayed: See Notes.
Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work.
Rinse mouth. Induce vomiting (ONLY IN CONSCIOUS PERSONS!). Refer for medical attention.
SPILLAGE DISPOSAL STORAGE PACKAGING & LABELLING
Consult an expert in case of large spill! Sweep spilled substance into sealable containers; if appropriate, moisten first to prevent dusting. Wash away remainder with plenty of water. Do NOT absorb in saw-dust or other combustible absorbents.
Separated from combustible and reducing substances, strong acids, organics, ammonium compounds, powdered metals, food and feedstuffs. Dry.
Do not transport with food and feedstuffs.

    PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE:
    COLOURLESS CRYSTALS OR WHITE POWDER

    PHYSICAL DANGERS:

    CHEMICAL DANGERS:
The substance decomposes on heating above 400░C, on contact with strong acids producing toxic fumes including chlorine dioxide, chlorine fumes and producing oxygen. The substance is a strong oxidant and reacts violently with combustible and reducing materials, causing fire and explosion hazard. Attacks many metals in presence of water.

    OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS (OELs):
    TLV not established.

    ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body by ingestion.

    INHALATION RISK:
Evaporation at 20░C is negligible; a harmful concentration of airborne particles can, however, be reached quickly especially if powdered.

    EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
The substance irritates the respiratory tract. The substance may cause effects on the blood, kidneys , resulting in lesions of blood cells, kidney impairment and formation of methaemoglobin. The effects may be delayed. Medical observation is indicated.

    PHYSICAL
    PROPERTIES
Decomposes below boiling point at 400░C
    Melting point: 368░C
    Density: 2.3 g/cm3
Solubility in water, g/100 ml: 7.3
    ENVIRONMENTAL
    DATA

    N O T E S
Will turn shock-sensitive if contaminated with organic substances, reducing materials, metal powders, ammonium compounds. Environmental effects from the substance have not been investigated adequately. Depending on the degree of exposure, periodic medical examination is indicated. Specific treatment is necessary in case of poisoning with this substance; the appropriate means with instructions must be available. Rinse contaminated clothes (fire hazard) with plenty of water.
    Transport Emergency Card: TEC (R)-46.
    NFPA Code: H0; F0; R0; oxy.
